PES Part 2: Deciphering the Strategies (K-5)
How to identify and transition the strategies your students are using for addition and subtraction

Click here to purchase 1 month access ($49) to view PES #2: Deciphering the Strategies (Addition and Subtraction)

There is a clear scope and sequence as to what strategies students will use with addition and subtraction problems. When your children are using an unfamiliar strategy to solve these problems, it can be frustrating trying to figure out how to help them. Not only is it important to identify the strategy that is being used, but you must also know what strategy logically comes next, and how to recognize when they are ready to transition.

Demystifying the Strategies will focus on helping parents learn the scope and sequence for addition and subtraction by:

1) Identifying the strategies that are used,
2) Recognizing what should come next logically and student readiness,
3) Help develop skillsets necessary for more sophisticated strategies
4) Develop fluency with number facts in a logical and meaningful way

You will have the opportunity to practice, collaborate with others, ask questions, and develop curriculum for your child at home during this time.   This is a 3-hour training that will be live and interactive with an extended Q & A afterwards.  The presentation will be recorded and available to purchase and watch at a later date.

It's highly recommended that you take Part 1: Bridging the Gap before joining this session (see below).

This is a 3-hour training that was recorded from a live event. It's highly recommended that you take this class in order to have a foundation for the upcoming classes. The video is available to purchase and view right now.

You will have the opportunity to practice strategies, and develop curriculum for your child at home during this time.  Bridging the Gap focuses on  understanding how to teach math to children in a way that is consistent with how they learn. The emphasis will be on creating a strong foundation for the four basic operations.

EMPOWERING PARENTS:
If you have ever experienced frustration or bewilderment while teaching math to your children, then this is an incredible opportunity to learn from one of the best math gurus in the field. You will learn how to best meet the math needs of your children and :

• Develop the basic skills necessary to help teach math in a meaningful and consistent way to your children.
• Understand strategies that your children are learning and how to best guide them to more sophisticated strategies.
• Learn how children intuitively solve problems and what they should learn next
• Understand why many children become adults who were “never good at math”
• Use our Mathmigo app to help children practice and transition between strategies

OUR DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER:
Come join Allan Yu the Math Guru for the first part of our Parent Education Series (PES) designed specifically to empower and teach parents how to teach math to their children.  Allan is the founder of ASTEME Math and STEM Learning Center and a leader in progressive math education on the Westside. He was a director with the UCLA Math Project specializing in individualized education, and cognitively guided instruction.  Over the past 20 years, he has helped numerous private and public schools develop their math and parent education programs, and has helped thousands of parents and teachers work successfully with their children by bridging the gap between the Common Core Standards and the traditional way of learning math.

HOW WE LEARNED MATH:
The modality of math instruction has drastically shifted due to the current pandemic and the recent introduction of the Common Core Standards (CCS). Parents are now struggling more than ever to help their children learn math in a meaningful way that is consistent with what their children are learning in school. The CCS method for teaching math is based on years of research into the best teaching practices around the world; however, it is inconsistent with how WE learned math and can cause confusion and frustration especially when we try to teach our own children.
